How Michael Did It
Michael Hastings wrote this business plan as his final project while completing a Master's Degree in Legal Administration at the University of Denver — a feasibility study for starting and running a Virtual Bankruptcy Assistant business. It won 2nd place (and $100) in the school's competition, then advanced to the state competition, earning him dinner with the Governor of Colorado and a shot at the national competition in D.C.
Michael used the plan and these marketing materials to launch his bankruptcy petition drafting business to immediate success. We were so impressed once we saw the results that we acquired his marketing materials and business plan so every student could learn from them.
In his own words, from an email exchange after he started marketing:
“I have stopped marketing all together as I have more than I can handle... The marketing that I used to capture my current clients were direct mail (sales letter with a brochure and business card) [and] a free online classified ad. To be honest, I just started the marketing officially on 08/01, mailed 750 letters and advertised on the classified ad website for less than a week before I had 2 clients.”
What his first year looked like:
- 45-petition backlog at $400/petition = $18,000
- 15–20 new petitions per month at $400 each ≈ $96,000/year
- Total first-year income: roughly $114,000 — without taking on any additional work beyond what came to him from marketing he'd already stopped doing.
Since then, Michael has grown his business to more than 45 petitions a month.
