Tax preparation and bankruptcy petition drafting are close cousins. Both start with a client interview and a stack of financial documents. Both mean entering income, expenses, assets, and household details into standardized government forms — accurately, on deadline. If you can take a client from shoebox to filed return, the petition workflow will feel familiar fast.

The difference is the calendar. Tax work compresses into a few frantic months; bankruptcy filings happen all year. For a tax preparer, that makes petition drafting the natural off-season complement: a second document-driven service that uses the same skills, the same home office, and the client-intake habits you already have.

This training teaches you to draft court-ready Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 petitions from scratch and certifies you as a Bankruptcy Petition Specialist™ — so you can work remotely for bankruptcy attorneys nationwide from May through December, then dial back for tax season.

Who This Training Is For

  • Seasonal tax preparers who want steady income in the off-season
  • Enrolled agents and tax office staff comfortable with forms, figures, and client interviews
  • Preparers who want a second service line without learning an unrelated trade from zero
  • Anyone who already has the home office, software comfort, and detail habits the work requires

No prior legal or bankruptcy experience is required. All materials are downloadable or accessed online — you can start training today.

Why tax preparers pick this up fast

The bankruptcy means test is an income analysis. The petition schedules are categorized lists of assets, debts, income, and expenses. The intake process is a structured client interview with document collection. Every one of those is a tax-season skill — this training just teaches you the official bankruptcy forms they plug into, plus the rules that govern them.

Frequently Asked Questions

|
Can I do this only in the tax off-season?
Yes. Petition drafting is project-based — you take on the volume you want, when you want it. Many students ramp up from late spring through fall and scale back when tax season hits.
Does tax knowledge actually transfer?
Directly. Income documentation, expense categorization, household size, filing deadlines, IRS-style official forms — the overlap is substantial. The bankruptcy-specific rules and schedules are what this training adds.
Do I need legal experience?
No. No legal background is required. Video lessons walk through every form and schedule from the ground up, and the workbook has you draft a full petition from de-identified real client information.
Who would my clients be?
Bankruptcy attorneys. Most students work remotely as independent Virtual Bankruptcy Assistants, drafting petitions the attorney reviews and files. Course bonuses include marketing training for landing your first attorney clients.
How long does it take to complete?
Most students work through the core training in a few weeks to a few months, studying at their own pace alongside their other commitments.
What software do I need?

We are a bankruptcy petition training organization and do not develop, sell, or provide bankruptcy petition preparation software.

For many years, our training programs have taught students how to draft bankruptcy petitions using the free downloadable demo version of Best Case Bankruptcy software by Stretto, one of the most widely used bankruptcy petition preparation platforms among bankruptcy law firms. We are not affiliated with Stretto and do not receive compensation from them.

Stretto now also offers a cloud-based version of Best Case Bankruptcy that runs through a web browser. While the cloud edition is convenient because it can run in a web browser on any computer operating system, it includes a limited free trial period, whereas the traditional desktop edition, which installs on a Windows computer (or can run on a Mac computer using software such as Parallels), continues to provide a demo environment for learning purposes for as long as it is installed.

We encourage students to use the desktop edition while completing our training courses so that they can practice drafting the forms, schedules, and other components of a bankruptcy petition in an environment similar to what many bankruptcy law firms use.

Later, when accepting paid work drafting bankruptcy petitions for attorneys, you will use the software that the attorney or law firm is licensed for and uses, which they will provide you access to.

While each major bankruptcy software platform takes a slightly different approach to completing the forms and schedules of a bankruptcy petition, they all complete the same standardized bankruptcy forms and schedules. Our training courses teach you the petition process itself — which applies across all bankruptcy software products.
