If you can shepherd a purchase agreement from offer to closing, you can learn to draft a bankruptcy petition. Purchase contracts, disclosures, addenda, closing packages — real estate agents handle detailed, deadline-driven paperwork every day. Bankruptcy petition drafting uses that exact same muscle: gathering client information, completing standardized forms accurately, and getting every detail right.

Here's what makes it a smart fit for agents specifically: bankruptcy work is counter-cyclical. When interest rates climb and transactions dry up, bankruptcy filings rise. The same market that slows your commission checks sends more work to bankruptcy attorneys — and those attorneys hire trained petition drafters.

Our training teaches you to draft accurate, court-ready Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy petitions and certifies you as a Bankruptcy Petition Specialist™. Work remotely for attorneys nationwide, on a schedule that flexes around showings, closings, and your existing clients.

Who This Training Is For

  • Agents in slow seasons or slow markets who want income that doesn't depend on transaction volume
  • Transaction coordinators whose whole job is already accurate, deadline-driven document preparation
  • Part-time and semi-retired agents who want flexible, work-from-home income between deals
  • Agents looking for a recession-resistant second skill that complements a paperwork-heavy career

No prior legal or bankruptcy experience is required. All materials are downloadable or accessed online — you can start training today.

Why real estate agents pick this up fast

A bankruptcy petition is a standardized package of forms and schedules — client financial details, assets, debts, income, and expenses, assembled precisely and filed on deadline. That's structurally the same work as assembling a clean closing file. You already have the habits attorneys are looking for: accuracy, follow-through, and comfort with dense documents. This training just teaches you the bankruptcy-specific forms and rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

|
Do I need a legal background?
No. No legal experience is required. The training starts from the ground up and walks you through every form and schedule on video. Your real estate background — client intake, contracts, deadlines — is genuinely relevant preparation.
Can I do this alongside my real estate business?
Yes. Most students train and work part-time around an existing career. Petition drafting is project-based work you schedule yourself, so it fits naturally around showings and closings — and you can lean into it harder when the market slows.
Is bankruptcy work affected by the housing market?
It tends to move opposite to it. High rates and tight household budgets slow real estate transactions but increase financial distress and bankruptcy filings. That's what makes this a natural hedge for commission-based agents.
Who would I actually work for?
Most of our students draft petitions for bankruptcy attorneys — remotely, as independent Virtual Bankruptcy Assistants. Course bonuses include marketing training for landing your first attorney clients.
How long does it take to complete?
Most students work through the core training in a few weeks to a few months, studying at their own pace alongside their other commitments.
What software do I need?

We are a bankruptcy petition training organization and do not develop, sell, or provide bankruptcy petition preparation software.

For many years, our training programs have taught students how to draft bankruptcy petitions using the free downloadable demo version of Best Case Bankruptcy software by Stretto, one of the most widely used bankruptcy petition preparation platforms among bankruptcy law firms. We are not affiliated with Stretto and do not receive compensation from them.

Stretto now also offers a cloud-based version of Best Case Bankruptcy that runs through a web browser. While the cloud edition is convenient because it can run in a web browser on any computer operating system, it includes a limited free trial period, whereas the traditional desktop edition, which installs on a Windows computer (or can run on a Mac computer using software such as Parallels), continues to provide a demo environment for learning purposes for as long as it is installed.

We encourage students to use the desktop edition while completing our training courses so that they can practice drafting the forms, schedules, and other components of a bankruptcy petition in an environment similar to what many bankruptcy law firms use.

Later, when accepting paid work drafting bankruptcy petitions for attorneys, you will use the software that the attorney or law firm is licensed for and uses, which they will provide you access to.

While each major bankruptcy software platform takes a slightly different approach to completing the forms and schedules of a bankruptcy petition, they all complete the same standardized bankruptcy forms and schedules. Our training courses teach you the petition process itself — which applies across all bankruptcy software products.
