Nobody reads a borrower's financial life faster than a mortgage professional. Pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, credit reports, debt-to-income math — assembling a clean loan file is exactly the skill set bankruptcy petition drafting demands. The petition is just a different destination for the same documents.

And the timing logic is hard to ignore: when rates rise, mortgage volume falls — and bankruptcy filings climb. The industry that lays off loan officers and processors in a downturn is the mirror image of the one that gets busier. Petition drafting turns the worst part of the mortgage cycle into your second income stream.

This training teaches court-ready Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 petition drafting from the ground up and certifies you as a Bankruptcy Petition Specialist™ — remote, project-based work for bankruptcy attorneys nationwide, with no license required.

Who This Training Is For

  • Loan officers riding out a high-rate market who want counter-cyclical income
  • Processors and underwriters whose entire job is already financial-document analysis
  • Mortgage professionals who've been laid off or had hours cut and want a skill that doesn't depend on rate cycles
  • Anyone from lending who wants remote, self-scheduled work built on skills they already have

No prior legal or bankruptcy experience is required. All materials are downloadable or accessed online — you can start training today.

Why mortgage professionals pick this up fast

A bankruptcy petition is assembled from the same raw materials as a loan file: income documentation, asset statements, debt schedules, and household expenses. The means test is a debt-and-income calculation you could practically do in your sleep. What's new is the official bankruptcy forms and the rules around them — and that's precisely what the video lessons and workbook teach.

Frequently Asked Questions

|
Do I need a license for this?
No license is required. Most of our students draft petitions as independent Virtual Bankruptcy Assistants working for bankruptcy attorneys — the attorney represents the client and reviews and files the petition.
How much of my mortgage experience transfers?
A lot. Document collection, income calculation, debt analysis, and file accuracy are the daily substance of petition work. You'll spend your study time on the bankruptcy forms and rules, not on learning how to read a bank statement.
Can I do this while still working in mortgage?
Yes. The training is self-paced and the work is project-based, so many students build their petition-drafting side business while employed — then have it ready when volume drops.
Who pays for petition drafting?
Bankruptcy attorneys hire trained drafters on a per-petition basis. Course bonuses include marketing training for landing your first attorney clients.
How long does it take to complete?
Most students work through the core training in a few weeks to a few months, studying at their own pace alongside their other commitments.
What software do I need?

We are a bankruptcy petition training organization and do not develop, sell, or provide bankruptcy petition preparation software.

For many years, our training programs have taught students how to draft bankruptcy petitions using the free downloadable demo version of Best Case Bankruptcy software by Stretto, one of the most widely used bankruptcy petition preparation platforms among bankruptcy law firms. We are not affiliated with Stretto and do not receive compensation from them.

Stretto now also offers a cloud-based version of Best Case Bankruptcy that runs through a web browser. While the cloud edition is convenient because it can run in a web browser on any computer operating system, it includes a limited free trial period, whereas the traditional desktop edition, which installs on a Windows computer (or can run on a Mac computer using software such as Parallels), continues to provide a demo environment for learning purposes for as long as it is installed.

We encourage students to use the desktop edition while completing our training courses so that they can practice drafting the forms, schedules, and other components of a bankruptcy petition in an environment similar to what many bankruptcy law firms use.

Later, when accepting paid work drafting bankruptcy petitions for attorneys, you will use the software that the attorney or law firm is licensed for and uses, which they will provide you access to.

While each major bankruptcy software platform takes a slightly different approach to completing the forms and schedules of a bankruptcy petition, they all complete the same standardized bankruptcy forms and schedules. Our training courses teach you the petition process itself — which applies across all bankruptcy software products.
